Bareneed

Bareneed is a small, but prosperous fishing community which is located near Bay Roberts, on Route 72 leading to Port de Grave. The origin of the name Bareneed is a subject of local interest. Some people say the name is a corruption of the terms "bare need," since the barren landscape could just provide enough to survive. Others say the name from the barren landscape of the Harbour Hills which were referred to as the Bareneed Hills.

The one of the interesting features of Bareneed is the beach with a barachois, a bar of sediment which stretches across the mouth of a brook where it enters a bay. Students from Ascension Collegaite's Gaia Group completed a beach cleanup in 2006.

The first Anglican Church was built in Bareneed in 1816. The present St. Mark's Anglican Church was built in 1926 and was known as the Free Labour Church, the Master builder was Mr. William Henry Batten.
