The
Town of Carbonear, seated like a jewel in a peaceful valley, is
one of the oldest towns in Canada. It was first mentioned by Fishing
Admirals in 1550 and was first settled by Nicholas Guy in 1630.
The town's rich cultural history includes pirates, battles, the
Irish Princess, Sheila Na Geira , and a prosperous fishery.
17th Century of History of Carbonear
As
you enter the town, you can see Carbonear Island, the site of a
number of battles, located at the mouth of the harbour. In 1812
Mr. H.C.Watts requested three guns to protect the town from American
privateers. Two of the guns can be seen today on Harbour Rock Hill.
Heritage Structures, museums, and monuments add to the historic
feel of the town.
As one
the the largest towns on the Baccalieu Trail (population 4759 - 2001
census), Carbonear has many Baccalieu Trail regional services including
the Trinity Conception Square Shopping Centre, the Regional Community
Centre, the regional hospital, and the regional campuses of the
College of the North Atlantic and Keyin College.
The
town's NaGeira Threatre Festivial
held in July and August is one of the most extensive in the province.
In 2003
the beautiful community won a provincial Tidy Towns award for a
second time. Judges Bea and Frank Rose described the town as follows
when making the award for 2003:
“Carbonear
is exceptionally neat and tidy. Waste management planning is a high
priority with an annual beach cleanup and composting by many residents.
With good co-operation from the commercial sector, the town is very
supportive of its many volunteers and volunteer projects.
There
is excellent use of historic property such as the Rorke Premises,
Princess Shelia Park, Harbour Rock Hill, the Railway Station, with
restoration of the old post office currently under way.
The
town’s urban forestry is outstanding as mature native and introduced
trees blend well with a good variety of larger, growing shrubs to
give the town old world charm. There are many good landscaping areas
on private property creating a very pleasing environment and public
areas have excellent landscaping. Public area floral arrangements
are very colorful, diversified and balanced with some well planned
floral displays on private properties, and the commercial sector
makes good use of planters and hanging baskets. The town’s turf
and ground covers are well groomed and maintained.”
The
Conception Bay Regional Community Centre houses the Princess
Sheila NaGeira Theatre, a 384 seat theatre featuring concerts
and theatricals almost every weekend. In the summer months the NaGeira
Theatre Festival provides first class entertainment. The new theatre
is now the official home of the annual Kiwanis Music Festival. It
also houses the council office and public library. Next door to
the Community center is the Railway Station Museum, which provides
a window on the town's fascinating history.
