Gull Island, Conception Bay

Gull Island, Conception Bay, is located on Route 70, between Northern Bay and Burnt Point. Gull Island was actually named for the island off shore, which is a small, rocky nesting place for birds, adjacent to the coast. Gull Island has a beach to the southeast and southwest which exposes the community to the weather of the North Atlantic Ocean; however, it is located within a short distance from the fishing grounds which were used by the local fishermen who were involved in the inshore fishery.

Tilts in the Past

Like fishermen in many small communities in Conception Bay who settled on exposed shorelines to be close to fishing grounds, they usually moved inland in the fall to be more protected from the wind and storms of the winter. The winter homes that they built what were commonly called "tilts." They used nearby berry grounds and small patches of land supported subsistence-type gardening to suplement their food supply. A berry-picking area known as "under the tilts" located inland from Northern Bay was believed to be used by Gull Island residents as a winter residence.
