Hawthorne
Cottage was home of famous Arctic explorer Captain Bob Bartlett.
The cottage is a fine example of the picturesque style of architecture
in Newfoundland and is furnished with artifacts and memorabilia
from Captain Bob's voyages.
Born
in 1875, "Captain Bob's" involvement in Peary's expeditions
to the North Pole, the Canadian Arctic Expedition commanding the
Karluk in 1913-14 and numerous scientific arctic voyages for The
National Geographic, the Smithsonian, and other scientific groups
have made him a significant figure in the history of arctic exploration.
During
the Canadian Arctic expedition of 1913-18 under Arctic explorer
Vilhjalmur Stefansson, Captain Bartlett walked 700 miles across
Arctic ice and down the Siberian coast to save 14 people on the
ill-fated Karluk from certain death. This action earned Captain
Bob Bartlett the following citation from marine historian Thomas
Appleton: "the finest feat of leadership in Canadian Marine
history
