Fishermen's Museum

The Fishermen's Museum was started by George Noseworthy, an artist who moved from the USA to live and paint in this area. He started collecting artifacts and displayed them in the school in 1967 and 1968. Soon public interest had been kindled and a board of Directors was formed and construction of the present building was started in 1969. In May 1970 the Fishermen's Museum was officially opened.

On display are numerous artifacts which depict the life and work of the Newfoundland inshore fisherman. An exhibit of various types of boats used in the fishery of the past are also on display.

Porter House Interior

Near the museum is Porter House, which is furnished as a typical fishermen's home of that period. The furniture is mostly handmade. One room is set up with a display of sea shells, fish and a small wildlife display. Part of the museum is also the Hibb's Hole School, one of the few remaining one room schools. The school has a photographic display showing different aspects of the fishery and the way of life in a small outport.
