Old Perlican is one of the oldest communities in Newfoundland. Situated on the tip of the Bay de Verde peninsula (at the crossroads for Route 80 -Trinity Bay Highway - and Route 70 - Conception Bay Highway), it is in close proximity to the famous fishing grounds of Baccalieu Island.

Leading Fishing Community

Always one of the leading fishing communities in the province, the town has three successful seafood processing plants in 2006. It is the fishing centre for the south side of Trinity Bay and the north shore of Conception Bay. The crab, shrimp and ground fish plants as well as the large concentration of fishing boats and harbour infrastructure have maintained the town's prosperity.

Early References

One of the first references to Old Perlican comes from a report written by Captain Charles Leigh in 1597. He says that a Spanish vessel had been fishing out of a place he called Parlican that summer. By 1612, people had begun to call the place Old Perlican. John Guy mentions Old Perlican a number of times during his trip into Trinity Bay that year. The 1675 census of Newfoundland lists 146 people living at Old
Perlican that year including 11 planters and their servants. In spite of being attacked and burned in the French raids in 1697 and 1705, the community survived and grew.

Beckett Heritage Home

The town has many sites of interest including a large, developed harbour, historic churches, the Beckett Heritage Home and twine loft with many artifacts, and the developing Memorial Park, which contains the town story board and the War Memorial.

Like most communities on the Trail, it is world renowned for its hospitality and its spectacular view of icebergs and whales.
