Spaniard's Bay was probably frequented by Basque and Portuguese fishermen (referred to as ``Spaniards'' by English fishermen) in the 1500s and 1600s. However, its recorded place in history goes back much further!

560-575 Million Year Old Fossils

In 2004, Guy Narbonne, of Queen's University in Ontario, found new fossils in Spaniard's Bay. The rare fossil creatures he found were 560-575-million-year-old and came from a mysterious time known as the Ediacaran. They are amongst the most interesting examples of the earliest complex life, experts say. The organisms appear to be somewhat plant-like, with "frondlets" - leafy structures that branch from stems. These were probably free-floating, elevated above the sea floor by a stalk. Science magazine reported about these marine organisms called rangeomorphs, because they are preserved in three dimensions, unlike many that have been flattened to two dimensions over eons of time.

Labrador Fishery

Beginning in the late 18th century stationer crews from bays, such as Spaniard's Bay, that lined the east coast of the island of Newfoundland began arriving north to fish for cod from small-scale fishing stations all along the Labrador coasts. The Labrador fishery was continued to be very important to the economy in the 19th and early 20th century. Every spring schooners left for “The Labrador”, some containing whole families, and returned home in the fall. Even today, people go to fish "on the Labrador."

"Lassy Wall"

Traditional rock walls are seen scattered throughout the community. "Lassy Wall," which can be seen on the shore line in front of the Anglican Church, was constructed by community residents during the Great Depression. It was called the "Lassy Wall" because workers were paid with molasses.

Tilton

Tilton, part of the municipality of Spaniard’s Bay, is at the intersection of Route 70 and 73 to New Harbour. Route 73 also joins Veterans’ Memorial Drive. In the early 1800s temporary shelters (or tilts) were built there, resulting in the name Tilt Town, which was eventually shortened to Tilton.

Habitat Estuary for Waterfowl

In 2004 a Stewardship Agreement was signed between the Towns of Bay Roberts and Spaniard's Bay which protects and conserves a key habitat estuary for waterfowl.
