For a completely contrasting reason, Dildo Island was designated as "Place of Provincial Significance" by the Newfoundland government's Provincial Historic Commemorations Program. Dildo Island was recognized because it represents more than 2,500 years of occupation by various cultures.
Kelly Russell, who with his family willl be beginning a third season of "A Time in Pigeon Inlet" in Bay Roberts, was designated a "Tradition Bearer" by the Newfoundland government's Provincial Historic Commemorations Program. Kelly, who is a well-known fiddler, was given the award because he is a tireless promoter of Newfoundland and Labrador’s traditional music.
The town of Carbonear was gradnted $100,000 in funding to develop an exhibit that will help interpret the significance of Carbonear Island in the history of Newfoundland.
Senator Fabian Manning, who announched the sunding said: "The Carbonear Island Exhibit...will explore early and winter residence, military fortifications, the lighthouse period, fishing use and shipwrecks around the island."
It will highlight how area residents in the late 1600s and early 1700s came together on Carbonear Island to successfully repel Pierre Le Moyne D'Iberville and his forces, which were attacking Newfoundland's coastal settlements at the time. That's the same D'Iberville after whom the Coastal Heritage Hiking Trail is named, one of the projects for which Manning announced federal development funding last year.
"The exhibit will add an important piece of Newfoundland and Labrador history to the interpretation available at the (Railway Station) museum, which will also undergo renovations and landscaping improvements to accommodate the new exhibit," Manning noted.

Baccalieu Island
The Baccalieu Island Ecological Reserve
is one of the most interesting places to visit on the North Shore of Conception Bay.
The following photo essay is about a group of European Divers who took a tour around Baccalieu Island with Ocean Quest Adventures of Conception Bay South. The article, written by Lillian Simmons and photographed by Dennis Flynn, was published in the Compass:
William Gilbert, chief archeologist with the Baccalieu Trail Heritage Corp., has published an article in the journal Post-Medieval Archaeology identifying a copper plate engraving from the 17th century as a depiction of John Guy's meeting with the Beothuk in Trinity Bay in 1612. The engraving was long identified as one of Bartholomew Gosnold trading with Native Americans in New England in 1602.
